F/B 1991: Shawn tried to get himself declared insane. Why? To avoid his quarterly project. Ya, his dad doesn’t let him get away with that.
Present Day: Lassie solved a case by himself and his throwing a party… for himself. Party includes a homemade banner and crime scene photos over the food. (Lassiter is awesome). The case Lassie solved? A billionaire businessman (Bernie Bethel) had an affair w/ his assistant, she tries to call it off and he strangles her to death. Lassie turns on the tv because, naturally, they are doing a story about the case, however unfortunately for Lassie, the story is interrupted by Breaking News: Bernie Bethel has been found not guilty by reason of insanity… Poor Lassie… he can never really catch a break can he? Now Bethel gets to stay in a mental institution instead of rotting in prison like he deserves.
Cut to the police station, and Lassie is PISSED! Well maybe Shawn should have been on the case, hmmm? Now they want to prove the Bethel is a fraud, how? Well we’re going to send in Shawn as a mental patient of course, cuz, that’s the best idea ever. Right? RIGHT?
Cue the opening credits… I love the opening credits.
Anyway… cut to the mental institution where Shawn is going in undercover. Jules is nervous, after all, what if they never let him out? Henry has a contact inside, Dr. Elliot who is going to be Shawn’s contact on the inside. Shawn has four days to figure out if Bethel is faking it or not. Shawn’s cover diagnosis btw: narcissistic personality disorder or “handsome disease.” Oh and Gus is going in undercover with him.
Now we’re inside the mental institution, and Gus’s cover: and orderly named Suggs (cuz apparently it’s like Gus, but backwards.) SHAWN IN A ROBE! Anyway, Gus spots a gorgeous woman, Vivian, cue Gus’s creepy “Hello…” Shawn spots Bethel and his brother Daniel. Daniel is giving him some skittles and drops a bunch on the floor: taste the rainbow! (product placement much?)
Cut to group therapy on the lawn with all the patients, one of whom sniffs Shawn (I bet he smells like pineapple… and jerk chicken). Shawn strikes up a conversation with Bethel and asks him to meet him after dinner in the library for desert: skittles. Shocker. Bethel goes a little nuts when one of the other patients has a mirror so an orderly brings him a pill. Shawn tells the nurse in charge about his other disorders: outrageous intelligence syndrome and obsessive successful disorder… oh and that he’s from the future. Another patient says that Shawn is full of it, and that he looks way to together. Shawn has to think fast or else his cover is going to be blown. So what does he do? He throws all the patients pills around and takes off on a golf cart of course.
Cut to the basement where Lassie and Jules are holed up. Shawn is in restraints but don’t worry, he can get out of them… they’re just incredibly soft. Shawn says that Bethel is really good, and almost believes that he is crazy. Doctor says he is, Lassie says he isn’t. Shawn is going to try and get Bethel to confess on camera after dinner he just needs one thing: skittles. (over abundance of product placement.)
Later at the library, Shawn is waiting for Bethel (skittles and all) but he dosen’t show up. Lassie is barking in his ear about how they’ve been waiting for an hour an a half: nothing. Lights about to go out, they have to finish it in the morning.
Cut to Shawns room, and damn that bed looks comfortable. Shawn is asleep clutching a teddy bear and it’s one of the most adorable things that I have ever seen. Gus sneaks in and wakes Shawn up. He says that he just saw Bethel sneak out of his room and into the kitchen. They’re on their way to the kitchen when they run into Vivian… or Frank.. ya, turns out the hot chick from before has multiple personality disorder and I mean honestly, Gus, shouldn’t you have seen that coming? She’s in a freaking mental institution.
Anyway, at the kitchen Gus and Shawn see Bethel talking to a refrigerator… umm… wtf? Uh oh, what if Bethel isn’t faking it?
Next day: Shawn tells Lassie that maybe Bethel isn’t faking it… and Lassie is totally and completely annoyed at this point. Oh, and to Jules’s horror, Shawn seems to be liking it at the mental institution a little too much. Now Shawn just wants a chance to prove that Bethel in fact IS insane.
Cut to the Library where Shawn has brought Bethel some skittles (and all of this is on tape… there’s a camera in the plant on the table). Shawn tries to get him to bring out the crazy, but now Bethel seems to be sane. What the heck is going on? Shawn thinks something strange is going on, oh and he is going to prove it! (GO SHAWN!)
Later at the pool, the mental patients are doing exercise (I am a tree.. BE the tree… sorry). Shawn is still trying to get Bethel to go crazy. A nurse brings Bethel his pill and Shawn notices that it’s the same pill that was brought to him when he was at group therapy. Aha! His medication is actually working, that’s why he isn’t going crazy. Shawn also notices that Bethel’s fingers in on one of his hands are permanently curled. Turns out Bethel also has degenerative arthritis. He couldn’t have strangled his assistant.
Cut to Anger Management class (wow..), Shawn is telling a story about his father when Gus comes and breaks him out. They run into Bethel again and this time he’s crazy. Shawn notices that the pill they are trying to give him this time is not the same pill as before. Someone is switching out his medication. Shawn thinks someone in the institiution wants to keep Bethel incoherent, like maybe Dr. Elliot who is in charge of medication. He thinks someone is paying him to do it, to keep Bethel unstable.
Shawn goes to find Dr. Elliot, and finds him dead. Well, crap. Shawn is about to leave when someone knocks him out with a blow to the back of the head.
Back at the station, Gus shows up. Turns out he was fired from the institution. Ya, that will happen when you make googly eyes at one of the patients. Gus informs Jules and Lassie about the developments and they wonder why the arthritis was never brought up by Bethel’s lawyer. They need to talk to him.
Cut to the Mental institution where Shawn wakes up strapped to a bed (so many dirty jokes spring to mind here…). A nurse and an orderly are hovering over him and they tell him that they found him passed out in a restricted area. Shawn tries to tell them the truth about what is going on but only makes himself sound more crazy.
Jules and Lassie go to talk to Bethel’s lawyer and find him talking to his brother. They ask him about the arthritis. He says that Bethel was a complainer and that he didn’t think anything of it. Bethel’s brother is pissed that his brother may have been innocent. Oh, and they find out the lawyer has been handling Bethel’s affairs for 10 years, and is his only client. Who handles all of Bethel’s money, well its all in trusts.
Cut to the mental institution where Gus and Vivian show up to break Shawn out. As they are escaping they find Bethel being moved up to the 2nd floor where they do electroshock therapy. Vivian distracts the guards while Shawn and Gus sneak Bethel out.
Back at the lawyers office, Lassie discovers that the lawyer doesn’t have power of attorney over Bethel’s trusts. Jules gets a call informing her that Shawn just broke Bethel out. And she does not look happy about this.
Oh, and BTW: Shawn already knows who’s behind everything. Why does this not surprise me?
Remember the nurse from Group Therapy? Ya, it’s her, and they’re at her house. Turns out that she was paid by Bethel’s brother to switch his medication and to give him electroshock therapy, but she didn’t kill Dr. Elliot. Who was that you ask? The brother who just happens to show up right then and point a gun at everyone. He wanted Bethel’s money, and the secretary that Bethel was having an affair with figured it out so he killed her. Dr. Elliot found out about the whole pill switching thing and Daniel killed him too. How do they get out of the whole gun being pointed at them thing? Well turns out Bethel is afraid of saxophones so Shawn finds a Kenny G. c.d. and puts it on which causes Bethel to go a little nuts. In the confusion, Gus tackles the brother and takes the gun (somebody finally gave Gus a gun!!). Lassie and Jules walk in on Gus grooving to Kenny G. with a gun drawn on Daniel.
The last scene is Gus flirting with a lucid Vivian who is getting better. Shawn, Jules and Lassie are getting thanked by Bethel. Shawn still really likes the institution and Jules drags him away.
BTW: BEST PSYCH-OUT EVER!
Shawn: “That’s my daddy!”
Carlton: “That’s your boyfriend.” Jules: “I know.”
Shawn: “I’m so good it’s stupid. I’m stupid good.”
Jules (to Lassie): “The man is a genius. He fooled a jury, I don’t think he’s going to fall for you dressed as Lord Kensington.”
Gus: “He’s the only one of us who could pass as someone in need of institutionalization.” Shawn: “I’ll take that as a compliment.” Gus: “I wouldn’t.”
Overall Grade: B+. I honestly think that there was no better place to send Shawn then a mental institution (or maybe a Psychic conference. Could you see it? Are you listening Steve Franks?). And the fact that they all could buy it was simply great. One of my favorite parts of the episode though was tiny: Lassie calling Shawn Jules’s boyfriend. I don’t know why but it made me smile so wide. My only problem with this season so far is that, for all the commercials bragging about the amazing guest stars (this weeks was Molly Ringwald), they have gotten such little screen time that it was almost sad. If you’re going to boast that you were able to get great guest stars, at least give them more than five minutes of screen time.

Next new episode of “Psych” airs November 30th at 10pm EST on USA. (Guest Star: SHATNER!)
P.S. Here is an AWESOME “Psych” fanvid that Timothy Omundson (Lassie) RTed on Twitter:
