“Oh my God, theres two of them!”
So Jess is helping out with her school’s Thanksgiving play when she runs into another teacher Paul (played by Justin Long… who is AWESOME) and she gets up the nerve to ask him to come over to her house for Thanksgiving. He agrees. (Noo!! The Ness shipper in me is dying!)
So Jess tells the gang that they’re having Thanksgiving and the guys are not too happy about it. They have a tradition (or not) of Dudesgiving: Watching the game and then going shopping at Best Buy (product placement much) for Black Friday. Winston: “or as I like to call it, Friday.” Jess tells them that they don’t have to do anything, that she’ll take care of the cooking. Oh and by the way… does anyone know how to cook a turkey? Cue Schmidt taking charge of the whole cooking catastrophe. Let’s start with the fact that the turkey doesn’t fit in the oven… so why not stick it in the dryer?
So Paul shows up early and it turns out… he is JUST like Jess (and it’s weird). Winston and Schmidt seem to like him… Nick has a problem with him. Hey Nick, jealous much? Jess tries to force Nick and Paul to get along by sending them out to get a missing food item… it doesn’t go over very well.
While Nick and Paul are gone, Cece realizes that she’s kind of into Schmidt. You see Schmidt yelled at Cece when she interrupted his methods while cooking by getting her germy hands all over his food. She tells him that she’s a bad girl and asks him what he’s going to do about it. Schmidt is oblivious… oh Schmidty…
When Nick and Paul return it’s obvious that the two still aren’t seeing eye to eye. Cue the fire alarm going off. The turkey in the dryer is on fire! Schmidt takes off his shirt (why does Schmidt take off his shirt to do everything? And why is it always funny?) and flies into the laundry room to put it out. The turkey is ruined. Cue the gang going to neighbors house for Thanksgiving instead. The neighbors not home but Jess has a key (cuz this isn’t weird or awkward at all). Jess pulls Nick outside of the neighbors apartment and yells at him for making Paul feel uncomfortable. Totally a lovers spat, and I love it! It’s awesome. Oh, and Jess mentions that she totally wants to have sex with Paul, big time. Everyone in the apartment can hear her… including Paul. No wonder he’s still around.
When Nick and Jess rejoin the gang, she and Paul decide to perform part of the Thanksgiving show that they put on at the school. Paul goes to hide and in the process finds the neighbor… dead. He is traumatized…
Cut to the Black Friday line at Best Buy. Jess and the guys are waiting in line and Jess is pissed at Nick still. Cue Paul showing up and serenading Jess. It’s a cut moment. Someone in the line gets mad because he thinks that Paul is cutting so Nick volunteers to go to the back of the line so Paul can have his spot. Jess tells him to wait and they all go to the back. Awe… Jess and Paul start dancing awkwardly off into the parking lot…
Nick: “We’re just gonna watch football, drink beer, and then we’re going to Best Buy later for Black Friday.” Winston: “Or as I like to call it: Friday.”
Schmidt: “Here’s another tip, don’t ask a guy out on a first date on the least sexy holiday in America.” Jess: “What are the sexiest holidays in America?” Schmidt: “The most sexy holidays are the 4th of July, Independence day obviously. Women’s history month and Christmas.”
Schmidt: “I wanna let you know up front that I have some control issues in the kitchen. So if I’m gonna do this, I’m cooking the whole meal. I don’t want you touching anything. And I don’t want to hear ‘Schmidt, Schmidt you’re using too much tarragon.’” Jess: “You will never hear that from me.”
Jess: “No! He’s here early! How do I look?” Schmidt: “It’s better if you don’t know.”
Jess: “I just need you to not do that thing you do.” Nick: “What thing? I don’t do a thing!” Jess: “Yes, you get all mean and you make that little turtle face!”
Overall Grade: A. I just love this show. I love the comedy, the unrequited romance… and I love the Nick and Jess dynamic. If you’ve read any of my other reviews you know I love the idea of Nick and jess together so the jealousy that took place in this episode made me happy and I loved it. I also think Justin Long is a great actor and he just brought the funny with him. Oh, and Schmidt makes my life.
