Ok, before I begin on this one I have to admit, I am a bit biased about this episode: I saw it taped and had a blast. BTW: Every time I go to one of the tapings I talk to Kunal… and I love him…
This is not a date… remember that…
Sheldon is afraid of birds… shocker… and one just happens to be harassing him outside of his window. Which prompts Leonard to decide to go to the movies with Penny to avoid birdapalooza… but is this a date?
According to the two of them it’s not… they are off to the theater. When they arrive some changes are immediately made. Leonard picks the movie (about dams… really, Leonard really?) instead of Penny picking the same romantic love chickflick that they would have normally gone to. Leonard also reveals to Penny that the only reason that he ever agreed to go to those types of movies is because he wanted sex… typical male. Leonard also makes Penny pay for her own ticket.
After the movie, the two go out to a bar and Leonard and Penny still maintain that it is NOT a date… Leonard makes her pay for her own fries and Penny sparks up a conversation with a guy about his manuscript (where he hopes his roommate gets crabs… awesome). Cue Leonard’s jealousy. He tells Penny that he knows the only reason that she’s talking to this random dude is because she is trying to make Leonard jealous. So he’s going to go strike up a conversation with a girl… and he’ll do it too… don’t tempt him!
Cue Leonard talking to a girl named Laura. Penny comes over and apologizes for ditching him and he tries to shoo her away. Laura says “you must be Penny… I totally get it now…” which leads to a “whose more of a dumbass” argument… which ends when Penny can’t spell asthma and asks to be taken home.
Back in the hallway Leonard apologizes to Penny for the horrible night that they’ve had. Penny forgives him and tells him that she kinda liked the new cocky Leonard which prompts Leonard to say “I’m putting sex back on the table!” with that adorable nerdy head tilt that I love. She tells Leonard good night. Leonard “I am an asthmatic dumbass.”
Meanwhile… during this whole “non date” that is going on (does this remind anyone else of that “Friends” episode where Monica claims that it’s not a date, its just dinner with no sex. “what the hell do you do on a date?” sorry…) Sheldon is fighting the bird. He even makes a bird death ray to try and get the bird off of. Finally Sheldon decides that he is going to shoo the bird away… but not before putting an awesome Boba Fett helmet and grabbing a broom. He opens the window, deploys the broom and the bird flies into the apartment… landing on Sheldon’s spot. Sheldon: “NOOO!!!!”
Sheldon calls Amy and Bernadette over to help him get rid of the bird and Bernadette makes Sheldon face his fear instead “Just pet the stupid bird!” Cue Sheldon falling in love with the bird. He makes Bernadette take his picture with the bird and goes out to grab the birds nest. Cue the bird flying out of the window “Come back you stupid bird so I can love you!!!”
Penny: “And remember, he’s more afraid of you than you are of him” Sheldon: “That doesn’t help.” Penny: “No, I was talking to the bird.”
Raj: “Come on, Sheldon, Star Wars!” Howard: “I’m pushing play. I mean it. If we don’t start soon George Lucas is going to change it again.”
Sheldon: “Hummingbirds are the vampires of the flower world.”
Sheldon: “Trust me, if I had a death ray, I wouldn’t be living here. I’d be in my lair enjoying the money the people of Earth gave me for not using my death ray.”
Amy: “If you’re keeping him, I’ve got a cage you can borrow. One of the test monkeys slipped on a banana peel and broke his neck. It was both tragic and hysterical.”
Overall Grade: B. This episode made my Leonard/Penny shipper heart happy and gave me hope for the future. I also wanted to give you guys some behind the scenes things that took place at the taping (cuz I’m just that awesome). When Leonard had his scene where he was explaining how Penny always picked the movie, Johnny messed up so bad that he shouted “F*ck me!” He then came over and apologized to the audience. So cute. Also, during the monkey slipping on a banana peel line, Mayim actually started laughing and couldn’t contain it… which caused everyone else to laugh, including the camera guy and Bill Prady (executive producer). Oh, and at the end, I talked to Kunal, who is one of the sweetest actors that I have ever met… and he stole my pen… twice.
