The first part of this is more of a recap…
So we left off with Sam and Dean being rushed to the hospital. Dean with a broken leg, Sam with his brain hemorrhage. Oh and did I mention, the hospital is run by Leviathan? Meep.
Oh and Bobby is missing! His house was burned down by Leviathan and we don’t know where he is!
And Cas exploded. (WHY?!?!?!)
So I thought that the whole episode was going to be about how Sam, Dean and Bobby (if he was alive) were going to escape from the hospital. I was SO wrong. Within the first 5 minutes Dean’s leg is set, Bobby (BOBBY’S ALIVE!) finds him, brings him clothes, and tells him to meet him by the ambulance dock while he goes to find Sam. They all sneak out and steal and ambulance to get away. I was kinda bummed that Dean didn’t get to kick anyone’s ass with those crutches though. That would have been EPIC!
Anyway, cut to three weeks later. The gang is hiding out at Rufus’s old shack while Dean heals. Bobby takes off to do something, and Sam takes off to get food. While getting food, Sam finds a newspapaper with a story that reminds him of a case he worked as a kid. Cue Sam taking off to check it out and Dean freaking out because Sam took off, because, ya know, Sam is still kinda unstable with the whole seeing Lucifer thing.
Sam goes to find the evil nasty (called a kitsune) and low and behold, it’s the girl that he met when he was a kid named Amy (played by Jewel Staite. STARGATE!! *nerd alert*). She tells him that she’s not a bad person. She took a job as a coroner so she wouldn’t have to kill people, but her son was sick and the only way for him to get better was to have “fresh meat.” She said to let her live. To remember what she did as a child for Sam.
Cue flashback, Sam is hanging out with Amy at her house when she hears her mom come home. Sam hides in the closet. Amy’s mom comes in. Says that 2 hunters in a crap Impala (hey! I like that Impala, thank you very much) have caught up to her and that they have to leave. Papa Winchester and Dean are on the case. Saw that coming. Anyway, Amy tells her mom that she’ll pack if her mom goes to gas up the car and her mom leaves. Sam comes out of the closet (hehehe), and threatens Amy. She asks if he really wants to kill her, and he says no. Sam is about to leave when Amy’s mom bursts in the door and threatens Sam. Amy kills her mom to protect him.
Back to the present. Sam decides to let her live and goes back to his hotel where he is welcomed by Dean who punches him in the face, “New Rule, you steal my baby (the Impala), you get punched.” Dean asks Sam why he left. Sam tells him. Dean gets pissed because Sam didn’t really take care of the situation, but says he trusts Sam and will let her be.
Sam and Dean take off and go to another town. Dean drops Sam off at a hotel to check in while Dean says that he’s going to go fill a prescription, but instead he goes to find Amy. He tells her that he has to kill her because she’s going to slip eventually and then proceeds to stab her. Cue Amy’s son walking in and telling Dean that he’s going to find him and kill him one day.
Oh! And Leviathan is hot on the trail of the brothers the whole time. One finds the store where Sam saw the newspaper, calls to tell his boss that the Winchester were definitely here and then proceeds to poor hot Nacho Cheese onto the owner so he can eat him. “Everything tastes better with Cheese.”
I really enjoyed this episode, and it was directed by Jensen Ackles (Dean) which means of course it’s going to be great. And the flashbacks brought a whole new insight into Sam’s background.
My one complaint? I MISS CAS! Argh!! Cas brought a whole new dimension to the show that I LOVED. I love that sexy Angel and when he “blew up” last week I cried. Literally, tears pouring down my face. Oh, and I also wished the flashbacks hadn’t been so interspersed in the story line. It got a bit old that every time we went back to when Sam was a kid, the whole screen was sepia toned. Ugh.
Btw: There was a flashback scene where these kids were picking on Amy and threatening her. One of the kids (the little redhead) was the kid from the episode “Dead in the Water” in season 1. I HATE WHEN SHOWS DO THAT! GET A DIFFERENT KID!
My favorite line: “All the coolest people are freaks.” LOVE!
Overall rating: A. It was a well thought out and structured episode.
And if you saw the preview: OMG JO NEXT WEEK!!
Next new episode of Supernatural airs October 14th at 9pm on THE CW.
